I can't end this review without mentioning Jennifer Hudson, who was amazing as Motormouth Maybelle. You Can't Stop the Beat is just so much fun, isn't it? It's just so catchy and fun to sing along to. She's been great on Mom, Match Game, and now Hairspray Live! I'm not a big fan of hers, but she was pretty great in this. Man, Rosie O'Donnell is really having a great year. Prudy was such a great secondary villain, and Andrea Martin really made it work. Her role was relatively small, but every second she was on TV was awesome. She's an amazing Tracy, and she can really sing.Īndrea Martin was also great. Maddie Baillio was great in the lead, and was incredibly well-cast. My favorite moments of the show always happened to feature Grande. But she was great, and delivered my personal favorite performance in a crowd of great performances. I was initially skeptical of Ariana Grande in the role of Penny. The whole cast of Hairspray Live! was so great, and the casting was just top notch.

That's what made The Wiz Live and Grease Live work so well, and the lack of fun made The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live, well, kind of disappointing and boring. It was just so much fun, and that's really what mattered. Note: this is a spoiler-free review, because for those that haven't yet seen the show, or any version of Hairspray, I don't want to ruin the magic for you. I watched it before I watched The Goldbergs (one of my favorite shows). But by the time tonight rolled around, I couldn't wait for it. I must admit, I had never seen Hairspray, so I was not excited when they announced it was the next musical. I graduated from Baltimore City Community College myself.Hairspray Live! aired tonight, and I can say that, unequivocally, Hairspray Live! was NBC's the best live musical yet. Still love the shout out to Essex Community College. Ariana at the end was wearing heels that were way too high for the period, and it made her look a little kinky.

Harvey was a little stiff, but he is not a young man. But the new costumes are really well done and, while different, are just as well done as the original. Hardcore fans probably will notice the technical precision in which the dancers do their thing, the change in costumes on many of the originals etc. Yes there were some technical issues, however its live and therefore forgivable. And Ariana Grande, well I had never heard her sing before today(because I'm apparently not that cool) but she did a great job.Costumes were pretty nice, and Rosie O'Donnell is actually bearable. Jennifer Hudson is A-Freaking-mazing, of course.

And Martin Short is adorable but just not Walken, you know.

I have no idea how he has such cleavage, but it is quite impressive. On the other hand, Harvey Firestein is so cute as the mom, he kind of steals the show. I think this was hard to do considering the other amazing movie version with Christopher Walken and John Travolta.
